Welcome to the Derbyshire Lieutenancy website
Here you will find information about how His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant and Lieutenancy colleagues can support the residents and businesses of Derbyshire.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mrs. Elizabeth Fothergill CBE, is His Majesty The Kings’s representative in the County and is supported by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants.
The Lieutenancy strives to promote the beautiful County of Derbyshire, its people, culture, diversity, heritage and history by serving its communities and encouraging engagement, across all groups and sectors.
Mrs. Elizabeth Fothergill, CBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire
The Role of the Lord-Lieutenant
The Lord-Lieutenant is His Majesty the King’s representative in the County; with a foremost duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. Following the example of the King and other members of the Royal Family, the Lord-Lieutenant seeks to promote a good atmosphere and a spirit of co-operation by giving encouragement to voluntary service, and to benevolent organisations, and by taking an interest in the business, industrial and social life of the county.
The Vice Lord-Lieutenant may be given such duties as the Lord-Lieutenant decides and stands in the place of the Lord-Lieutenant when the Lord-Lieutenant is absent, sick, or otherwise unable to act.
Deputy Lieutenants support the Lord-Lieutenant in general, carrying out tasks as directed by the Lord-Lieutenant.
Officers of the Lieutenancy
The King appoints a Lord-Lieutenant for each County on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
The Lord-Lieutenant appoints Deputy Lieutenants (DLs), subject only to The King not disapproving of the granting of the Commission. DLs are holders of a public office and use the post nominal DL.
With The King’s agreement, the Lord-Lieutenant appoints a Deputy Lieutenant to be the Vice Lord-Lieutenant.
The age of retirement for all Officers of the Lieutenancy is 75; after which Deputy Lieutenants continue to use the DL post nominal and are retained on a Supplemental List.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire is Mrs. Elizabeth Fothergill CBE.
The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire is Andrew Cochrane DL

A marvellous Together at Christmas Royal Foundation Carol Service in the beautiful St Mary’s Church in Ilkeston. Wonderful musical performances by the Grand Central Chorus, the Embark Academy Choir, West End soloist Jonny Fines and the Harpur Hill Brass Band. The roof was raised with the singing of traditional carols accompanied by the organist from Derby Cathedral Alexander Binns. He also played the beautiful song Holm Sound by Erland Cooper, a favourite of the Princess of Wales. Each piece demonstrated the amazing power of music to bring us together in joy and celebration.

After the service and listening to a brass Band of Derbyshire musicians led by Capt Peter Ward, the congregation enjoyed festive treats and hot drinks.
